Burningman 2012:Fertility 2.0

ProjectMayan TricycleNext prototypeI need to build a bigger model, more in the style of the real thing. This one is a 1:6 scale. 1 inch on the model will be half a foot on the real thing. |
My current thought for the construction of the wheels/gears is to make the teeth seperately and laminate them between layers of plywood all glued and screwed together. I'm making a 1:6 scale model shown on the image in the background and working on the templates to start cutting the 2x52 smaller teeth and the 2x73 larger teeth, but thought it might be useful to visualize how big the REAL teeth wil be.
After a couple tries at making a template for the teeth, I finally did it right.
I cut out out the exact shape in a piece of 1/4" wood
Glueing a piece of wood to the back to act as a guide to make sure each tooth is marked exactlty like every other one.
With the right template, cutting the 104 teeth blanks (plus a couple backups) didn't take long.
I used a sander to shape the 104 teeth for the smaller ring-took a couple days, cuz I checked each one to carfully fit through the original temple tightly.
With the teeth cut, it's time to cut the rings that will laminate/hold them together.
This very thin plywood is easier to cut with a knife than a saw.

all 52 teeth cut and lined up.
Using a mitre box to cut the thicker teeth of the larger ring. 73 to make for each of 2 wheels. 146 plus spares.
I'm using a sander to shape the individual teeth. A band saw would be preferred, but I don't have one. I'm using the marking template to check each tooth as I slowly sand away the unneeded wood. Every tooth fits snugly through the die.

It's naked time. For about 2 hours a day the sun can shine to the ground between the two 4-plexes that border my side yard. On the weekends, I use this naked time to get my skin ready for the bright sun on the playa.
Cutting the thin luan plywood is hard work with a stanley knife, but probably gives a better edge than using a jig saw. I'm getting tons of tiny splinters in my hands. I have several bad-aids on as I type this.

Now making the 52 tooth gears.
The (poorly made) notches are for the scale 2x4s that will connect the 2 side to make a spool.

Pause for the eclipse!!
Notice the shape of the light beams filtering through the branches.
I forgot there was an annular eclipse but immediately knew it when I saw this.
