Burningman 2001: Windy City

Windy City will have two main parts, ~1000 pinwheels and one wind driven modified lawn sprinkler that will move on a garden hose track. The wind vehicle will not really look like my initial animations-it will instead be a 6 arm annemometer looking arrangement. To make the wind scoops for the vehicle, I started by making a plaster cone. |

Testing of materials for the pinwheels is an ongoing process. |

A base is added to the cone mold, while the cutting ang sharpening of the 1000 bamboo sticks proceeds. |

For good or ill, mirrored 3 mill mylar is my material of choice. Now, setup a jig to cut the 1000+ 6" squares. |

The top is cut off of the cone-I didn't like the way the point was shaped and thought it would be a problem to pull the fiberglass cones to follow from the mold. As an afterthought, I carved the burning man logo into the top of the cone. Don't know if this is going to complicate matters, I guess I find out soon. |

1000 pins is a good start, but white or yellow heads will be too hard to see on the playa-a bit of dark spray paint will make them easier to find when dropped. |
